94. John Wesley HUNT37 was born in 1773 in NJ.37 He died in 1849 in Lexington, Fayette Co., KY.37 He settled in Lexington, KY about the same time as George Hunt. John Wesley Hunt became a manufacturer of hemp at which he made a fortune, was for a long time president of an insurance company and the first bank chartered in Kentucky.
Their home is located in the historic Gratz Park District of Lexington at 201 North Mill Street, the House has been beautifully restored to various periods of splendor enjoyed by the Hunt and Morgan families.
John Wesley Hunt, the first millionaire west of the Alleghenies, built this federal period town house in 1814. Some of his famous descendents include Confederate General John Hunt Morgan, the “Thunderbolt of the Confederacy,” and Dr. Thomas Hunt Morgan, the first Kentuckian to win a Nobel Prize.
Features of the house include a three-story, cantilevered staircase, the garden and walled courtyard and the museum’s collection of fine Kentucky furniture, early 19th century portraits and porcelains. On the second floor, the Alexander T. Hunt Civil War Museum boasts an extensive collection of relics and Civil War memorabilia.
