First Generation

1. Col. Thomas HUNT1 was born about 1588 in London, England.1 "According to Mercer Co., NJ, records he was the father of Lieutenant Ralph Hunt of New York and Long Island. He had four sons: Ralph, John, Thomas and William. So far as is known only the one, Ralph, came to America. Thomas Hunt was a Colonel in Cromwell's Army at the decisive Battle of Marsden Moor, in England, in 1644. In as much as this was the decisive battle between the Catholic Army under Charles !'s Nephew, Prince Rupert and the Protestant's army under Cromwell and his generals, and the further fact that the turn of the battle hinged upon a specially trained group of soldiers selected by Cromwell, for their piety and devotion, I assume that Thomas Hunt was a protestant. There is the further fact that Cromwell and the Protestants had entered into an agreement with their Scot Allies that if the rebellion succeeded and Charles was overthrown the Nation Church of England would be Presbyterian. This special body of soldiers were named "The Ironsides".
Another reason to suppose that this was the case is that his son Ralph was a Presbyterian. For quite a period of time after the end of Charles' reign Presbyterian was the National Church of England."

Col. Thomas HUNT had the following children:
