Sixth Generation

623. Nicholas GIBBS was born in 1822 in TN.39 He died in 1910 in Hamilton Co., IL.39 Nicholas Gibbs had a country store located on what is now known as the Sam Gibbs farm. the store was across the road from Riley Lanius' house. The main commodities in the store were salt, coffee and whiskey. Each came in barrels and was hauled from Shawneetown. Nicholas hauled them in an ox drawn wagon and it took from one to two weeks to make the trip. If the oxen got tired on the road, he stopped at a home and changed oxen with the folks, then when he came back on the next trip, he stopped and changed back. Whenever night caught him he would stop and spend the night. they
called it a night's lodging and it was free. No one thought of charging for a night's lodging. At that time whiskey was kept in almost every home for medicinal purposes and the people came to the store to trade, brought along a pottery jug to get whiskey in. The above information is taken from Gibbs book, David Gibbs page 1.
