22. John TILLMAN was born on 17 April 1783 in Botetourt Co., VA.^3,10 He signed a will in 1850 in Preble Co., OH. He died on 24 February 1850 in Preble Co., OH.^3,10,46

John TILLMAN and Nancy HARLESS⁴⁴ were married on 3 September 1805 in TN.^10,46 John and Nancy forded the river at Cincinnati with the large group in 1805. On Nov 5, 1805, Tobias Tillman and John Tillman, Jr. made their first purchase of land at the U. S. Land Office in Cincinnati. Tobias's choice was the SW 1/4 and John Tillman, Jr's was the SE 1/4 of Section 12, township 7, Range 3E in Harrison Twp., Preble CO., OH. They made a colony of eight able bodied men, sufficient for their own protection.
In 1808, Nancy (Harless) Tillman, age 18, became homesick to see her parents and family in TN, and having only one horse in the family, John borrowed one and they made the trip on horseback. At Cincinnati, they had to ford the Ohio River. Nancy Tillman was a natural born heroine. They ventured into the river and the horse swam across. She rode safely with their first and only child (at the time) Susie on her lap. About 1812, John Tillman became alarmed because of the Indians and moved his family to a block-house at Lexington, Preble County, near West Alexandria. He moved back to Miller's Fork, and in 1814 built the brick house on the above farm, which was well preserved, but torn down in 1947. All of the 17 children were born there except Susie and Jesse. John had built the house from sale of meat. He rounded up herds of wild rail splitters and elm peeler hogs, drove them to market in Cincinnati and made considerable profits.
Nancy HARLESS was born on 10 September 1790 in VA.^3,10,46 She died on 1 September 1863 in Preble Co., OH.^3,10,46
