His children and grandchildren lived on this land until the Norris Lake excavation. Jesse was instrumental in the formation of Union County, serving on various committees. He was a licensed lawyer; he served six years as Justice of the Peace of Claiborne County, was the first elected high sheriff of Union County (1 Mar 1856), and was elected to the Tennessee legislature as Senator in 1869. He joined the Methodist Church at age 19; according to his obituary, written by J. M. Brogan, Asa Brogan and J. W. Taylor and published in the Maynardsville Union Eagle in 1898: "He was naturally gifted with oratory and was licensed to preach in 1878; he was ordained deacon by Bishop Levi Scott at New Market. He was a Methodist in theory and in practice - a deep doctrinal preacher. A good revivalist, he converted many souls. Trustworthy and benevolent, he was a man that his neighbors and acquaintances went to for advice. He was a faithful Christian worker till his death." Sarah SHARP and Rev.
