301. Thomas R. RUTHERFORD¹¹⁸ was born on 5 April 1807 in Travelers Rest, Charlestown, Jefferson Co., VA.⁴⁰ Location now in West Virginia.
He died on 22 July 1870 in Charles Town, Jefferson Co., WV.⁴⁰ He was buried in July 1870 in Edgefield Cemetery, Jefferson Co., WV.¹¹⁸ Thomas R. Rutherford hid the Confederate Flag which had been carried by General Jackson in the first Battle of Manassas, and other treasures, under the iron hearth of the fireplace during the Civil War, which was unknown to Gen. Grant who held a council of war in the house. Thomas R. Rutherford was the Sheriff of Jefferson Co., VA in 1850.
