118. Archibald RUTHERFORD was born on 16 January 1774 in Shenandoah Co., VA. He died on 10 September 1830 in Harrisonburg, Harrisonburg Co., VA. Archibald Rutherford was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, 1807-1816 and 1824-1825. When the commissioners were selected from the Senatorial Districts of Virginia to meet to select a site and organize a state university, Thomas Jefferson, Archibald Rutherford and James Madison were among those chosen. - source: The Albemarle of Other Days, 1925, P. 77. The Board of Commissioners met in May 1818 and chose Charlottesville, VA, for the location of the university. See page 219 of the Rutherford book, volume 1.

Archibald RUTHERFORD and Jane BURGESS were married on 23 June 1795 in Rockingham Co., VA. Jane BURGESS was born in 1775 in Rockingham Co., VA. She died on 2 August 1833 in Harrisonburg, Harrisonburg Co., VA.
