He served in the military from August 1861 to 1872 in U. S..222 In August 1861, at the age of seventeen years, he entered the Union Army as a private in Company B, First TN Infantry, commanded by Col. R. K. Byrd, adn served as a private soldier in that regiment until April 8, 1862, when he was transferred to the Third TN Infantry as First Lieutenant of Company I, and served in that capacity until May 25, 1863, when he became Captain of the COmpany and commanded it until the end of the war. He was mustered out February 23, 1865, at Nashville, having served in TN, KY, OH, AL, besides taking part in all the leading battles of the Georgia Campaign. The last battle in which he was engaged was that at Nashville, between the forced of Gens. Hood and Thomas. The war over he returned home to farming. He ran for the Legislature, but was defeated by Dr. M. L. Mynatt. In 1867 he was appointed by President Johnson as a Second Lieutenant in the Eightennth Regular Infantry, U. S. Army. He served in that regiment until the Army was consolidated in 1869, when he was transferred to the Eighth Cavalry. He resigned in 1872 and returned to Knox Co. and the farm.
In 1910 Fate was an a lawyer in Knox Co., TN. He died in 1911 in Knox Co., TN.93,214 He was a lawyer. He served in the 38th General Assembly (1875). He was Chairman of the Committee on military affairs. He was chosen Speaker of the House of the Forty-third General Assembly. He was always a Democrat.
