John Reilly MCCOLLOM²⁷⁷ was born on 23 October 1833 in Big Hill, Madison Co., KY.²⁷⁷ He was living in 1885 in Berea, Madison Co., KY.²⁶⁹ Military history: 4th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, Company G. Captains of Company "G"-- Richard L. Myers, James H. West James G. Dobbs and Elsey J. McCollum were coporals. Privates that are listed include Isaac Guinn, James Gordon, Thomas Overstreet, Thomas G. Watson, John Dobbs, Thomas Gwinn (Guinn), and Mathew Gwinn (Matthew Guinn). John R. McCollum is listed as John R. McCullum.

John was captured by the Confederate Army and was sent as a P.O.W. to Andersonville. After the Union Army rescued him from Andersonville, he was transported to a hopital in Louisville, Kentucky. His brothers located his whereabouts and when they found him, John was so out of his mind that he did not recognize his own brothers. They took him back to Rockcastle County where he was able to recuperate.
