JULIAN - Mr. Fred Auman Clapp, 80, passed away Friday, July 25, 2008, at his home. The funeral will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, July 27 at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church in Kimesville, N.C., with Pastors Todd Struble and Steve Joyce (Ret.) officiating. Interment will follow in church cemetery.
Fred was born in Alamance County, in the community of Kimesville, North Carolina, on March 25, 1928. He was a faithful and lifelong member of Mt. Pleasant UMC in Kimesville, where he was a member of the Methodist Men's Club. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II in the 317th Heavy Tank Battalion stationed at Camp Polk, La. He worked for Western Auto Supply Company in Greensboro for many years. During this time he enjoyed playing with the Western Auto Softball Team. He later worked for Burlington Industries in Burlington, and also with Guilford County Schools in maintenance for Nathanael Greene School for 17 years, where he retired in 1994.
Fred was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Eula Swing Clapp; brothers, Billy Talmadge Clapp and L.G. Clapp.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 54 years, Jean Flinchum Clapp of the home; two daughters, Tammy Clapp Fox and husband, Dan, of Raleigh, Linda Clapp Murray and husband, Mike, of Hopkinsville, Ky.; grandchildren, Lindsay and Will Fox, Morgan and Jameson Murray; brother, William Perry Clapp of Kimesville, N.C.; brother, Clifton Clapp and wife, Lucy, of Kimesville, N.C.; sister, Betty Clapp Shaw and husband, Bill, of Dallas, N.C.; sister-in-law, Nell Clapp of Kimesville, N.C.; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Terry and Patricia Shoffner of Julian, N.C.
The family will receive friends from 2 until 3:45 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant UMC Fellowship Hall in Kimesville, N.C., and at other times at the home.
The family would like to thank Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro for their professional care as well as many friends and family for the personal expressions of affection they have shown Fred during his illness.
