During the Civil War, Yankee soldiers were on their way south to meet General Sherman in Georgia and they burned the G.W. Phipps Sr. Home. The only thing left standing was the kitchen and the servants quarters. This home was off the Alamance Church Road where his grandson Page Phipps later lived. After the home was burned G.W. Phipps moved into a log cabin located on a hill and over the years they continued to add to the cabin. The final result was a large two story house and few people knew that the core of the large house was the original log cabin.
