"Augustine Clapp with his wife and two children came from North Carolina to Illinois in a covered wagon drawn by a span of gray horses that he prized very much. He started on the journey April 13, 1841, and was on the road until May 10, arriving and settling in Newell Township, where Newell Station now stands. He settled upon the south forty acres of that location. On arriving there he purchased seventy acres of land, that was partly broken, from the heirs of an estate, paying them forty dollars each for their interests. He later purchased another 80 acres for 6 dollars and acre. He and his wife were members of the Christian Church of which he has been a trustee. He helped build the church known as Pleasantview. In his political views he was first a Whig and after the organization of the Republican party he became a staunch advocate of its principles and is very proud to be numbered as a member of the party which he thinks embraces the best form of government.... He has filled the offices of school and district treasurer, township trustee and township supervisor. He also served as town clerk for a number of years and one year as assessor." Augustine R.
