GREENSBORO — Clarence L. "Johnny" Clapp, Jr., of Hidden Valley Road, Greensboro, N.C., died Sunday, February 15, 2009, at Maryfield, High Point, N.C.
Funeral services for Mr. Clapp will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, February 19, at the First Baptist Church of High Point with the Reverend Dr. Tim Cannon and the Reverend Dr. Lamar King officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Memorial Park. Members of the Thayer Thomas Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.
He was born in High Point, N.C., to Clarence Clapp, Sr. and Irma Ritchie Clapp on January 31, 1928. He attended Union Hill School, and graduated from High Point High School in 1947. In 1951, he received a BS degree from High Point College. From 1951 to 1955, during the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a GCA operator at Keesler AFB, Texas; Nousseau AFB, French Morocco; Neubie AFB, Neuberg, Germany; and McDill AFB, Tampa, Florida.
In 1985, he retired from the USPS at High Point Post Office, with 17 years of service as a clerk and an accountant. He was a member of the Thayer Thomas Bible Class, and a deacon at First Baptist Church, High Point, N.C., serving on many committees including the pastor search committee. He delivered Meals on Wheels in High Point for over 10 years.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Clapp was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Tim Carter.
On September 11, 1954, he married Dixie Dean Henderson of High Point. He is survived by his wife, Dixie; son, David Michael Clapp of Cary, N.C.; and daughter, Sarah Clapp Carter, of Greensboro, N.C.; brother, Charles R. Clapp, Sr. (Cynthia) of Jamestown, N.C.; and numerous cousins.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 6666, High Point, NC 27262 or the First Baptist Church of High Point, 405 North Main Street, High Point, NC 27260; or a donation of the Gift of Life by donating blood to the American Red Cross.
