James Ernest Clapp, 87, of Thomasville, formerly of the Mt. Hope Church community in Guilford County entered into life eternal on October 26.
Mr. Clapp was a lifelong member of Mt. Hope United Church of Christ where he had served as president of the Consistory, taught Sunday School, served as superintendant of the Sunday School and been a delegate to numerous church conferences. He served as a committee member for the Boy Scouts of America and was a recipient of the Civitan “Citizen of the Year” Award.
A son of the late J. Grant Clapp and Abigail Foust Clapp, he also was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Lillian Hutchens Clapp and a brother, John Lee Clapp. He is survived by sons, Larry of Greensboro and Kenneth of Salisbury; grandchildren, Marissa Lianne Clapp of Wilmington and Michael Austen Clapp of Greensboro; and sisters, Alice Black of Burlington and Ruth Harris of Whitsett.
A celebration of his life will take place at Mt. Hope United Church of Christ, Whitsett at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 28. The body will lie in state an hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Hope Church, 2400 Mt. Hope Church Road, Whitsett, NC 27377.
He was buried on 28 October 2010 in Mt. Hope UCC Cemetery, Guilford Co., NC.

WHITSETT - Mrs. Lillian Hutchens Clapp, 76, of 3612 Old Julian Road, died Sunday, July 8, 2001.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Mt. Hope United Church of Christ, Whitsett.
Mrs. Clapp was an accomplished seamstress with long terms of employment at Bates Nitewear and Olympic Products. She was a member of Mt. Hope United Church of Christ. A loving and devoted wife and mother, she had touched the lives of many through her caregiving and her courage during her battle with cancer.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, James Ernest Clapp; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Barbara Clapp of Greensboro; son, the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Clapp of Salisbury; grandchildren, Lianne and Michael Clapp; brothers, Kelly, Franklin, Richard, and Odell Hutchens; and sisters, Loraine Hudson and Faye Southern.
Visitation will follow the service at the church. The family will be at the home.
Memorials may be made to Hospice at Greensboro or the J. Ernest and Lillian H. Clapp Scholarship at Catawba College.
