James Washington CLAPP¹³³¹ was born on 2 June 1836 in Guilford Co., NC.^{1331,1332,1333} He died suffering from eczema, which with complications, caused his death. on 24 May 1903 at the age of 66 in Fairfield, Jefferson Co., IA.^1331,1332 He was buried on 27 May 1903 in Bethesda Cemetery, Fairfield, IA.¹³³¹ Funeral service were held at First Church by Rev. J. E. Corley and Rev. Alex Corkey. Earlier years of his life were spent in Jennings Co., IN where his parents had moved from NC in 1838. In 1854 the family moved to Buchanan Twp., Jefferson Co., IA. With the exception of a few years in Wayne CO., the remainder of his life was spent in Jefferson Co., IA. James and Samantha were the parents of 6 sons and 3 daughters. He lead an active life, was progressive in methods of farming and a prominent and influential member of the county in which he lived. An Excellent man and exemplary citizen.
