Robert died on 26 September 1913 at the age of 74 in Knox Co., TN.1419 He was buried in September 1913 in Clapp's Chapel Cemetery, Knox Co., TN.1419 "Robert Adair, who married Lurena Clapp, a lineal descendant of Nancy (Shell) Sawyers, enlisted as a private in Company C, 1st Tennessee Cavalry, U. S. A., at Flat Lick, Kentucky, April 1, 1862. He was a splendid soldier and was with his regiment in many skirmishes and battles. He was in the Cumberland Gap campaign and the retreat of Morgan's division to the Ohio River. In November, 1862, his regiment was mounted and transferred to the Army of the Cumberland. In a sharp engagement at Rigg's Cross Roads, Tennessee, April 16, 1863, this soldier received two wounds as follows: One on top of the head, and one in the right shoulder—the latter being quite severe. He was in the Tullahoma Campaign and battle of Chickamauga. Was in the East Tennessee and Atlanta Campaigns, both well known in history, and but few
exceed the latter for fierce battles and great loss of life. It was during Hood's Tennessee Campaign that this soldier received a third wound that almost proved fatal. In an engagement at Shoal Creek, Alabama, November 5. 1864, a bullet entered his left side—passing entirely through his body. A few minutes after receiving this wound his horse was killed and, as the enemy were advancing in heavy force, orders were given to fall hack; but his comrades brought him from the field apparently in a dying condition, but he finally recovered and is still living.
Discharged at Nashville, Tennessee, April 1, 1865."
