Joel and Bertha bought 56 acres of land just off the Dr. Isley Road adjoining his father's property and built a home there. They raised all 5 children there. Bertha Louona SMITH, daughter of Quintain Alphonso SMITH and Narcissa Emiline Katherine ROBERTSON, was born on 16 October 1887.²⁸¹⁵ She died on 5 December 1974 at the age of 87.²⁸¹⁵ Buried in Alamance Memorial Park.
