(Read before the May Reunion- August 30, 1899)

I. How well do I remember
When I was but a child
The tales my mother told me
In her loving tones so mild.

II. Of the dear old home in the South land
From which the May family came
Away back in the 20's
Our ancestors of honored name.

III. She told me of the old grandfather
And the old grandmother too
Their names, I thought so funny
As children often do.

IV. Of this old grandmother Friddell
She often used to tell
And her memory lingers with me
As if I knew her well.

V. The names of these dear old home folks
I used to think so queer
There was Uncle George Friddell
Who seems so very dear.

VI. There was Uncle Barney Troxler
And Uncle Felta Cobb
And Uncles Barney and Felta DeVault
But not one Uncle Bobb.

VII. I know you will want to laugh
At these old names so queer
But to us of the May family
These names are very dear.

VIII. And now I want to tell you
Of the fashion of those days
It was not ribbons, silks nor laces
With which were decked the Junior Mays.

IX. The fond mothers of today
With fair and dainty laces
And silks and ribbons gay
Bedeck their babies faces.

X. And robe their fair young children
In fine embroidered dresses
Their feet with slippers dainty
And friz their lovely tresses.

XI. But I'm afraid I will shock you
When I tell of the maidens dresses
Or else you will think I mock you
In that time of long ago.

XII. For in the time of which I tell you
The little lasses wore
A long tow linen garment
That-and nothing more.

XIII. The little girls of the older time
The little boys in similar array
And thought they were so very fine
I have heard the old folks say.

XIV. But the May family are scattered
Throughout the wide, wide world
But they meet in glad reunion
That their names may not be furled.

XV. At their Annual reunions
They clasp each other hands
And hope in Heaven to meet again
A holy happy band.

XVI. But for want of time and space
And for want of muse, as well
I'll close these line apace
For I've nothing more to tell.
