Scherer, was born June 29,1839, in Guilford County, N.C., and was married to F.R. Scherer May 25, 1857. She died March 12, 1897, at her home three miles south of Waterville at which place Rev. I. B. Helsey, pastor of the Lutheran Church of Waterville, preached her funeral sermon from Job xix, 25: “I know that my Redeemer liveth,” after which the remains were accompanied to Riverside Cemetery where they were deposited in their last resting place. Mrs. Scherer came to Kansas with her husband in 1870 and made for themselves a nice home three miles south of town where they raised a large family of children who have been her solace in her declining years. Her life was spent in her home and in the service of the Lutheran Church, to which she was most fondly attached. Its missionary work in particular was her chief delight. With heart and hand she assisted in moving the good work forward, and her presence and counsel will be greatly missed in the local organization where she was always a welcome member. An exemplary Christian, a fond mother and beloved neighbor has been removed from earth to the enjoyment of scenes more beautiful, and to reap the full fruition of her labors of love here on earth. She has now come in possession of treasures she has for these many years bee laying up in heaven. The reward of a well spent life is hers – for, as we sow so shall we reap. Brick Church records (page 86) says she married Rev. Fred R. Scherer and dismissed to Lutheran Church. Lillian Ann "Letty" HUFFMAN and Rev. The Late Rev. F.R. Scherer The name of Rev. F.R. Scherer, the subject of this brief sketch, is as familiar to our people as any household word. He organized the Lutheran church in Waterville and watched over its interests with the care of a father, and long before there was any church in Waterville he held services in a car. At that time this was the terminus of the C.B. railroad, and the coaches stood on the track over Sunday, as there were no Sunday trains. He preached in every school house for miles about Waterville, breaking to all the bread of life in all seasons, and the fruits of his early labors may yet to be seen on every hand. He took a homestead south of town and improved it as but few of his neighbors did at that time, and for years the fruit he raised and brought to town was a just reward for his early labors in that direction. Thus he sowed the good seed beside all waters on Sunday; and planted during the week trees, today bearing all manner of fruit, thus proving the truth of the saying "verily they do reap the rewards of their labors." His funeral was largely attended by a sympathizing and mourning community. The last tribute of respect paid this lifeless remains was the tribute of loving sorrowing hearts. Dead, yet he speaketh, and the rising generations will remember him as a faithful preacher and constant friend to all.
