Springwood Church Cemetery Record. Buddy was buried in September 1903 in Springwood Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Guilford Co., NC. Tombstone says "Killed in Wreck No.97, Danville, VA, Sept 27, 1903. Was killed as a fireman in the "Wreck of Old 97" on 27 Sep 1903. According to the book about the wreck, Albion was at the time engaged to Mary Stanley, a schoolteacher in Greensboro. She later became principal of White Oak school in Greensboro, but never married. The book "Tar Heel Tombstones" by Henry king, Down Home Press, Asheboro, N.C. has a story about the "Wreck". "Old 97 was the crackerjack mail train that wrecked near Danville, killing its crew of five and six postal employees." "The tragedy stirred a nation into mourning. A popular ballad told the epic story of the speeding train and efforts of the engineer and fireman to stop it. The sad tune is still played at fiddlers' conventions and sung at gatherings of country musicians." The mail train plunged from a 75 foot trestle. According to the Washington Post account "The skin and hair of the engineer and firemen were torn off by the impact of the steam engine." They were killed instantly. In spite of the song lyrics, Southern Railway officials estimated the train was going 30 to 35 miles an hour.
