Rev. Peter T. Klapp Had Been in Ill Health For Two Years -- In Ministry For 58 Years Rev. Peter T. Klapp, aged 83 years, died this morning at 8 o'clock at his home on highway 100 between Elon and Gibsonville, following four weeks of critical illness, and failing health of more than two years.
Rev. Mr. Klapp was a most able minister, and had been in the ministry of the Christian church 58 years, and was possibly oldest in the conference in point of service. He had held positions of honor and trust to both conferences and Southern Christian convention having been chairman of the board of foreign missions several years, and having taken a most active stand on prohibition. He had preached in many churches in the state, and only recently had held services in various churches in this section.
During the 58 years of his ministry, Rev. Mr. Klapp organized 38 churches, received 1,600 into membership, baptized l,000, and preached 5,630 sermons. He preached the first missionary sermon for the Christian church in the South in November, 1883, at Poplar Branch.
Funeral services will be held at the late residence Friday afternoon at 3:30 by Dr. J. O. Atkinson, assisted by Dr. J. U. Newman and burial will follow in Magnolia cemetery. Prof. C. J. Velie will have charge of the music, and Miss Gwendolyn Patton will have charge of the flowers.
He is survived by his wife, three daughters and two sons: Mrs. T. E. Green, Raleigh; Mrs. C. O. Robbins; Richmond; H. L. Klapp, San Francisco, and Miss Ruth and DeWitt Klapp, of the home. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Cicero Huffines and Mrs. Maggie Ellington, Greensboro. His first wife was Miss Anna Bland and she died in 1900; his second who survives him, was Miss Ella Soots. He died on 28 May 1931 at the age of 82.164
