BURLINGTON ­ Mr. Occo Dermont Gibbs, 88, of 205 Overbrook Terrace, died at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Edgewood Place after a declining illness. A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mary Sharpe Gibbs, who survives, and the son of the late Henry E. Gibbs and Ida Gerringer Gibbs. He was retired from Western Electric and was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of High Point College, where he was president of his Senior Class, a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, a veteran of the U.S. Navy-Flight Instructor, Scout and Bomber Pilot, Executive Officer Carrier Squadron, Commanding Officer of various sea and shore based flight units during World War II, Commander USNR (Retired). Survivors other than his wife of the home include, two brothers, Mr. Richard E. Gibbs of Oakland, Miss. and Mr. Royce L. Gibbs of Newport News, Va. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Dermont Gibbs; two brothers, Dr. F.L. Gibbs and Mr. Lindley Gibbs; and four sisters, Mrs. Clara Belle Howell, Mrs. Willie Coffin, Mrs. Hattie Qualls, and Mrs. Mozelle Mason. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Richard Stanley. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park. The family will be at the Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, prior to the service, and at other times at the residence. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 609 Trail 2, Burlington, N.C. 27215.
