The Clapp family would have traveled down the Rhine River, boarded the ship in Rotterdam, sailed to Falmouth, England, then on to Philadelphia.  This would have taken weeks and was by no means a pleasant trip.  The James Goodwill was probably a packet ship similar to the one pictured below.

Palatine Ship JAMES GOODWILL 1727

David Crockatt, Master, from Rotterdam, then Falmouth in England, and then landed in Philadelphia Sept 27, 1727.  I have the Clapp family in bold.

Comedian Stephen Colbert now knows Lancaster County as the home of his sixth great-grandfather. If you were watching the "Faces of America'' series on PBS you already knew that. In the four-part series Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. traces the genealogy of celebrities and then surprises them with the news. Gates told Colbert that the parents of his sixth great-grandfather, Hans Peter Ledermann (1711-1774), came across the Atlantic from the Alsace region.
The Ledermanns were Germanic in culture and language and Lutheran in religion -- not exactly in tune with the Irish Catholic heritage that Colbert frequently references in "The Colbert Report.''
"Not only were they German, my friend...,'' Gates began.
"... They were heretics!'' Colbert concluded.
Hans Peter's parents, Hans Sr. and Anna, settled in Lancaster County, where they thrived, according to Gates.
Hans Jr. changed the family's last name to Leatherman and bought a large farm here in 1757, during the French and Indian War.
