James Andrew Hunt is mentioned in a narrative (A Glance at the Past) written in 1900 by his brother John Mason Hunt as having gone across the plains in 1844 to Oregon from where he returned two years later with tales of the place which prompted several of those who heard him to sell their farms and move to Oregon. According to brother John's story, he was with James on several occasions as they "knocked around" the states of Iowa, Kansas, and Arkansas seeking a favorable place to settle and encountering many hardships. Further details on the life of James are not known.
