Sixth Generation

48. Wilson HUNT29 was born on 16 January 1754 in Rowan Co., NC.29 He died on 28 January 1833 in Fayette Co., KY.29 Married Margaret Shotwell (third wife). Rev. War Pension Record: No. 15352; W. #4242; B.L.Wt. # 34968-160-55. States he enlisted from Rowan Co., N.C. "Margaret personally appeared and made deposition in 1855, stating she was age 80 years and they were married 24 Nov. 1793 in the county of Fayette and state of Kentucky. Her name was Margaret Shotwell. There is no record of their marriage as the courthouse burned. She is now residing in the county of Owen, KY." His first name may have been James, as Samuel named son, James, and, on Wilson's will, it appears to be J. Wilson Hunt. From Mitchell Hunt's Mss.: "On the story of subject Wilson, the confusion continues about the identity and order of his first two wives, saying that Wilson 'married 1st a Miss Burns by whom he had a son Samuel and 2nd to a Miss Bryan by whom he had another son, Enoch, and third to Margaret Shotwell, Nov. 24, 1793, who bore him nine children. Conflicting with this is a record of Hunt marriages in Rowan Co. NC, which list 'Wilson Hunt to Agnes Burnet in 1790". If this is true it would appear that 'Burnet' was a 2nd wife and the first two children Samuel and Enoch (b. 1782 and 1785) would have been by the first wife, or else Enoch was born before Wilson married the 2nd wife. On the other hand there is the version that the first wife was a Bryan of whom no information has been found, and the 2nd wife was a Burns, dau. of Jacob Burns, who may be the one shown as Agnes Burnet. There remains a question about a third son, Joseph born to the 2nd wife according to Yount, but on whom no confirmation has been found. In any event, the work of Mrs. Kerik is most useful in providing the compilation on the family of Wilson Shotwell Hunt (1810-1890)." (the fore noted paragraph is from Mitchell Hunt's "Corrections") From Mitchell Hunt's first Mss. "He was a Rev. War veteran, serving in Rowan Co., NC, and on 15 Dec. 1832, at age 79, he applied for a pension while living in Fayette Co. KY. (his name is mistakenly listed as William Hunt). On 21 March 1780 he purchased from the state 599 acres (at 50 shillings the 100 acres) on both sides of Dutchmans Creek, beginning at the line of Joseph Bryant (sic) On 5 Feb 1787, he "lets" Jonathan Hunt, both of Rowan Co., NC, have 299 acres, beginning at the line of Joseph Bryan. On 22 Oct 1792 he is shown in a deed description to have land on Dutchmans Creek adjoining John Thomas. On 21 May 1799, Wilson Hunt and wife, Peggy, of Fayette Co., NC, sell to Joseph Standley 100 acres on both sides of Dutchmans Creek next to Isaac Esteb, witnessed by George Hunt, Sr., Jonathan Hunt, James Hunt, Jr. and Morgan Bryan, Jr., and proved by Jonathan Hunt in Aug 1799. He is said to have lived in Rowan Co., NC until '1785' (deed records show him there in 1787) when he removed to Fayette Co., KY, where he lived the rest of his life, his death reported as 28 Jan 1833 in the family Bible of his son Daniel." Mitchell Hunt and a descendant of Wilson Shotwell Hunt (W.S.H.III) believe that his first wife was a Bryan as he lived next door to the Bryans, and that she was the mother of his first child, Enoch, b. 1785.
