"On Friday, December 23, our community was made sad by the death of Brother James Graves, one of the pioneers and oldest citizen of this part of Knox County. He was born June 21, 1821 at this place and spent his long life of eighty-four years in this, his native community. He was the only living child of John Graves who was born 1780 and lived to the ripe old age of eighty-seven.
James Graves was married April 15th 1847 to Nancy Gibbs. Six children blessed their union of which five survive him. He served as a Union Soldier during the Civil War in Company F 3rd Tennessee Inf. His first wife died in 1895 and he was married the second time, in 1896, to Phebe Acuff of Richland, Grainger County who was a devoted wife through his afflictions.
The deceased was a member of the Baptist Church for sixty-one years and served as deacon most all that time. He was an upright Christian always yielding his influence for the cause of good and right. His life was devoted, Faithful, Patient and Beautiful through all his afflictions until the mystery of life was veiled in the mystery of death. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. G. W. Shipe in the church at Graveston after which the remains were laid in Graveston Cemetery to Sleep the sleep of the dead." "Respectfully submitted, A. J. Shepard, A. T. Warwick, Luther Bates"
