On April 28, 1895, he helped organize the first Sunday School in the Cox School House. Here he got donations for the first organ and song books for the church. Joe taught "singing schools" in all the area churches and schools. In order to have music, he carried a four octave organ with him in his buggy. Joe also wrote ballads and music. One of his most famous songs was "The Wayfaring Stranger". This song was taught in his singing schools and was later published in Texas as a folklore tune. Joseph Salling became the owner of a general store, after helping for many years in James Graves' store at Graveston. He also served as Justice of the Peace of Union County.
