Edward MERRITT was born about 1793 in Stokes Co., NC.¹¹⁹ He served in the military War of 1812, Private in Infantry on 28 November 1812 in Norfolk, Norfolk City, VA.¹²⁰ A Muster Roll of Captain John L. Hauser's Company of Inf., 5 Reg't North Carolina Militia. War of 1812. At Hillsborough, 28 Nov 1814 for 6 months. For Jan 9 to Feb 22, 1815, Roll dated - Norfolk, # of miles home -300, Place of residence - Stokes Co., NC. Sarah H. Merritt filed a declaration of a widow for pension under act of February 14, 1871 on 5 Jun 1876 in the County of Doniphan in Kansas. Sarah got a pension (#23442) bearing the date of 3 May 1879. The application number was 12,025. I have copies of the pension papers.

There was a William Carden and Robert Carden on the same page. Edward was living on 2 November 1850 in Grainger Co., TN.¹²⁰ He died on 15 April 1866 at the age of 73 in Troy, Doniphan Co., KS.^119,120 Sarah Hazeltine "Sally" CARDEN and Edward MERRITT¹²¹ were married on 2 July 1818 in Roane Co., TN.^120,121 Married by Esa Cobb. A child died in infancy. Both Edward and Sarah are buried in Troy, Kansas. They appeared near Maynardville (Grainger Co) after 1818 and lived there until 1857 when he, Sarah and quite a few of his family moved to Northeast Kansas (Doniphan Co).

37. Sarah Hazeltine "Sally" CARDEN was born about 1801 in NC.¹²⁰ She was living on 5 June 1876 in Troy, Doniphan Co., KS.¹²⁰ She appeared in the census in 1880 in Center Twp., Doniphan Co., KS.¹²² Living with son-in-law, Charles Young and family, in 1880:

Charles Franklin MERRITT¹²¹ was born in 1833 in Maynardville, Union Co., TN.¹²¹ He died on 8 April 1865 at the age of 32 in Maynardville, Union Co., TN.¹²¹ Charles died while on Furlough with chronic Diarrhea contracted while in the line of duty. Charles was a Corporal in Co. G, Second Regt. TN Cavalry. The three children were under the guardianship of Christian Case on 3 May 1869. Children received a government pension.
