40. John William SALLING¹³⁵ died on 31 August 1840 in Dade Co., MO. He was born in VA.⁵⁷ John Salling was born in Virginia. He fought for the 4th Virginia Regiment, 1761, French and Indian War under Col. Washington. John Salling had two sisters: Mary, who married a Branson, and Nancy who married George Johnson, probably a brother to John's wife. In 1799 John Salling was paying taxes on 200 acres in Grainger County. This acreage was in the heart of present day Maynardsville. James Salling, a son, later gave an acre to the church. Maynardsville Baptist Church now occupies this site. In 1815 John Salling bought 317 acres in Grainger County from Nathaniel Peters. The property was on Bull Run Creek, now Union County. Hannah S. JOHNSON and John William SALLING were married on 15 April 1802 in Knox Co., TN.^136,137 Bondsman Robert Bell. Name on bond is John SALLEY.

41. Hannah S. JOHNSON was born in 1777 in VA.¹⁷ She died in September 1818 at the age of 41 in Union Co., TN.¹⁷ She was buried in September 1818 in Salling Cemetery, Union Co., TN.¹⁷

James SALLING¹³⁸ was born on 19 February 1803 in TN.¹⁷ He died on 7 July 1862 at the age of 59 in Union Co., TN.¹⁷ He was buried in July 1862 in Salling Cemetery, Union Co., TN.¹⁷ James taught school at the Roberts School, located on Big Flat Creek, on what is now Longmire Road in the Corryton COmmunity. The school was located on the Roberts property across the creek from the John Zachary property. James Salling prepared his own book of mathematics which he used in teaching. Having no right hand, he made himself an artificial hand carved from wood and usied it to print the book. There is a picture of the carved hand on page 427. James served in the Civil War in Company F, 3rd Tn. Inf. Birth and death date from stone in Salling Cemetery, Union Co., TN. See page 254, 'Footprints'. All 6 children are buried in Salling Cemetery, Union Co., TN.

Henry S. SALLING was born in 1806. He died on 12 March 1849 at the age of 43.

Lucinda SALLING was born in 1808.

Mary SALLING was born in 1809. She died on 14 September 1845 at the age of 36.

Sterling SALLING was born in 1811. He died on 15 December 1845 at the age of 34.
