20. Joseph SALLING⁵⁷ was born on 24 April 1816 in Union Co., TN. Name paid Taxes value place date⁴¹ Land 200, value, $800, other 200, 1 poll and tax of $3.75. He served in the military 3rd TN Inf Co. F. in 1862 in Civil War.¹⁷ He died on 27 December 1862 at the age of 46 in Union Co., TN.^18,57 Joseph was buried in December 1862 in Salling Cemetery, Union Co., TN.¹⁷ Joseph walked over the mountains to Flat Lick, Kentucky, along with his son John and many others from Knox and Union Counties to join the army in 1862. Both John and Joseph joined Co. F 3rd Regiment Tenn Infantry, Union Army. This was one month after the birth of Joseph's daughter, Nancy jane Salling, his youngest child. During the Battle of Cumberland Gap, Joseph became ill. he was taken to the home of his brother-in-law, Scott McPhetridge, in Laurel Co., Kentucky. He remained there about one month and was advised to return home: however, enroute home he was captured, taken to Knoxville, and jailed. John Buckner and John Chesney, two of his neighbors, swore that they were Rebel citizens and secured his release. He died two months later as a result of treatment he recieved in jail. Jane Salling drew a widow's pension until Jue 4, 1875 when she was told that Joseph's death was caused by diseases he contacted before he joined the service. No records show whether she ever recieved the pension again. Jane MCPHETRIDGE and Joseph SALLING were married on 2 January 1837 in Grainger Co., TN.^58,59 Bondsman, James Sallings. Nancy SALLING Dau F S W 18 TN Fa: --- Mo: --- Jane died on 16 January 1896 at the age of 78 in Union Co., TN.^17,18 Died at the residence of her son in Texas Valley. Aged 78 years, 10 months and 14 days. She was buried in January 1896 in Salling Cemetery, Union Co., TN.¹⁷ Buried in Salling's Cemetery located on Hwy. 33, on Hill behind Mrs. Roy Cook's home, south of Hwy. 61, northeast of Maynardsville. This cemetery was started in Sept. 1818 with Hannah Salling, wife of the first John Salling, who came into Union Co. in the late 1700's.

John Henry SALLING Sr.¹⁴ was born on 25 April 1840.¹⁸ He died on 23 February 1864 at the age of 23 in Knoxville, Knox Co., TN.¹⁸ John was killed during the Civil War on February 23, 1864 and is buried at the National Cemetery, Knoxville, TN. John walked over the mountain with his father Joseph and joined the Union Army. He was a Pvt. in F Company, 3rd Regiment of the TN. Infantry. He was captured at Cumberland Gap after being shot in the arm. He was returned to Knoxville and put in prison. Records show that about 3 inches of his left arm were torn off and that he died as a result of the wounds. His widow Roxanna, fought for a pension which she received until May 1866. Buried in the National Cemetery at Knoxville.

Elizabeth SALLING was born on 12 April 1842. She died on 17 March 1844 at the age of 1.

Rebecca SALLING was born on 21 December 1844 in TN.^60,61 She died on 7 March 1887 at the age of 42 in Union Co., TN.^18,61 She was buried in March 1887 in Ousley Cemetery, Union Co., TN.⁶¹
