908. William Francis CLAPP⁷⁰¹ was born on 6 April 1822 in Edgar Co., IL.^701,702 He owned 200 acres in 1874 in Sharon Twp., Clinton Co., IA. Listed as W. M. Clapp in the Plat map owning 200 acres. Land was in the east half of section 20 in Sharon Township.
He died on 21 September 1907 at the age of 85 in Lost Nation, Clinton Co., IA. Buried in Sharon Cemetery, Clinton Co., IA. Cause of death, paralysis and chronic hepatitius. Death certificate says son of John Clapp of NC and Catherine Kirtnett (of GA). William Clapp moved into Jackson County, Iowa in 1845, and took up two hundred acres of government land there. About 1850 accounts of the California gold fields drew William to start westward with an oxen team, his route leading westward along the Platte River. He spent about a year out in California and returned via the Isthmus of Panama. He came up to Burlington and bought a horse to ride to Jackson Co. He had accumulated enough money to pay for his home. In 1869 he sold his Jackson County farm and purchased two hundred acres in Sharon Twp., Clinton Co., Iowa, and in the spring of 1870 moved to that farm.
