On 20 Jan 1807 when John was 25, he first married Catherine Turknett, daughter of Jacob Turknett Sr. & Barbara, in Asheboro, Randolph Co NC. Born abt 1792 in GA. John CLAPP and Catherine TURKINETT were married on 20 January 1807 in Asheboro, Randolph Co., NC. Catherine TURKINETT, daughter of Jacob TURKNETT and Barbara (?), was born in 1792 in GA. She died after 6 September 1825 at the age of 33 in Edgar Co., IL. Hillsborough Dist, Orange Co 1790, Jacob Darknet/Turknett, not to mention John Clap and Jeremiah Stoner She is named dau Caty Class in copy of will of Jacob Turknett, "one third part of my estate" 1822 Putnam Co GA. Edythe Stephens note: Philip Kirkenett & wife were sponsors to Magdalena Clapp (dau of Tobias) 28 Sep 1778 Brick Church Records, perhaps then off to GA? Will of Jacob Turknett does not name a Phillip. 1900 Camden Co MO census for son Reason says his mother b Georgia, son William F. death certificate says her birthplace GA My visit to Asheboro April 1992 scanning card catalog found no Kirknett type names, the closest was Kivett, a rather wealthy family living south of John Clapp
John CLAPP and Catherine TURKINETT had the following children: John CLAPP and Elizabeth Rogers BIDDLECUM obtained a marriage license on 25 October 1828 in Edgar Co., IL.227 Lic. #118, Book SA, page 8. They227 were married on 26 October 1828 in Paris, Edgar Co., IL.227 Married by J. Adams, JP., Book LA, page 28 John Clapp had three wives and at least twenty children. Seventeen heirs, children or grandchildren who were heirs of his deceased children, were apportioned shares in his probate proceedings (see below). John was born, married and started his first family in North Carolina. After John Clapp moved to Illinois his land purchases there totalled a dollar sum nearly equal to the inheritance he received from his father-in-law Jacob Turknett. John gradually sold off his land, the largest sales about the dates of his second and third marriages. At John's death he had only fifty acres remaining to provide for his widow and to divide among the seventeen heirs. See final section for distribution records found so far. House #259a, listed as 44, born in KY. She died on 3 June 1894 at the age of 87 in Piatt Co., IL.228 Buried in Piatt Co., Il, in the same lot with son James M. Clapp. Tombstone says" Elizabeth Rogers wife of John CLapp". Age 87 yrs 17 Days. Service by Rev. Joseph Martin. Did they divorce? Did she and John Clapp ever divorce? Buried in Piatt Co IL, in the same lot with son James M. Clapp Tombstone says "Elizabeth Rogers wife of John Clapp" The five children, derived from 1850 census Clark IL; at the time of the 1850 census John living in Edgar w/ son Reason. See note above, they may have separated prior to the 1840 census and reconciled for a time. Is this Elizabeth enumerated in Coles Co IL 1870 census as Elizabeth Reed, age 39? James M. and Mary E. Clapp are in this household. Indicates she was born in IL about 1822. She appeared in the census in 1880 in Galena, Jasper Co., MO.229 Dan. Clapp") m 4 May 1865 to Zurell Barret recorded in Edgar Book B/058. Crawford Co IL m records show several Butt-Taylor marriages, the spelling Bute appears only once in the Edgar Co record. 31 May 1851 Edgar Co IL mg Mary E. Clapp Steapleton to Missouri and contribute information indicating Mary Elizabeth Bute/Butt Taylor Clapp was a Browning in Missouri in the 1910 census.
