John died in a car-train collison on 1 March 1926 at the age of 61 in Jennings Co., IN.³⁴⁵ He drove a Ford coupe in front of a train at Roup's Crossing about 2.5 miles north of North Vernon, IN.
He was buried in March 1926 in Scipio Cemetery, Jennings Co., IN. John was the fifth of eight children. He attended Scipio School and Indiana Asbury College (now Depauw University). He then joined his father in the Scipio store, G.F. Amick and Son. John drove a huckster wagon for his father for a few years, delivering dry goods and groceries and taking in trade such commodities as eggs, butter, poultry, ginseng and fur pelts. He left home each Monday morning and stayed out most of the week, putting up at homes along the route at night. He ran the store after his father's death and managed 3 farms, one of his and 2 of his mothers. He started a bank in 1909 and also served as a postmaster. He was a Republican Presidential Elector in 1920 and was a trustee of Hanover College from 1913 to 1921.
