LaFollette Press, May 17, 1934, PROF. SUMMITT DIES SUDDENLY, Minister-Educator Passes Away From Stroke Late Saturday Evening
Funeral services for Rev. J. H. SUMMITT, retired Southern Methodist minister and school teacher who died late Saturday evening from a stroke of apoplexy, was held Monday afternoon in the M. E. Church, South, Rev. J. E. LOWRY being in charge of the services. Death occurred at the home of J. B. SUMMITT, a son, where Mr. SUMMITT was making his home. Mr. SUMMITT seemed in his usual good health Saturday and worked some in his garden in the afternoon. The stroke took him suddenly. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. J. M. CARDEN, Mrs. J. M. AGEE of LaFollette, and Mrs. M. J. DICKSON of Birmingham; three sons, J. B. of LaFollette, J. W. of Manatee, Fla., and R. L. of Middlesboro. Mr. SUMMITT was 75 years of age, had been a faithful member of the M. E. Church, South for many years. During his life he had been a minister and school teacher and had left the imprint of his right teaching and right living on many young men and women over East Tennessee.
