Allen played an important role in the formation of Union County during the mid 1800's. He was elected the 1st County Court Clerk. He was one of four commissioners appointed by act of the General Assembly to superintend the organization of the county, the other three were James W. Turner, William Needham, & Calvin Hansard. he and his father-in-law, Peter Sharp, owned and operated the Green Grove iron furnace on Fall Creek near Miller's Ferry, Clinch River. He and his four sons fought in the Civil War, Confederate Army, two of the sons dying while in the service. After the war a big percentage of Allen's vast acreage of land was confiscated by Carpetbaggers. Thus the inscription on his tombstone (erected by a grandson in the 1930's) that laments the loss of that land. And also laments the loss of the rest of the land to the TVA some 75 years later. This "Gone with the Wind" tombstone has been featured in newspapers and national magazines. (See picture on page 158 of Union County, Volume I)
