Jacob left Virginia with other families about 1800 and moved to Tennessee. The name Meltabarger was spelled many ways. The Meltabarger spelling was most common after 1860. Jacob, Peggy and their family lived at the "clear fork of Flat Creek" on the south side of Copper Ridge. This area is located near the Clear Branch Baptist Church off Tazewell Pike, in Union County. Like his brother-in-law, George Troutt, Jacob fought in the War of 1812. Jacob enlisted into service on 13 November 1814 at Knoxville, TN., for a tour of duty that lasted 6 months. He was mustered into Captain John Sharp's Company of Col. Edwin Booth's Regiment of the East TN Militia Volunteers. He was listed as a sergeant of the company. He was discharged on 18 May 1815, serving 6 months and 5 days. On 16 December 1815, Jacob appointed Samuel Nicholson as his attorney to collect 67 dollars and 83 cents that the government owed him for his tour of service. Jacob owned around 500 acres on the south side of Copper Ridge. Before his death, Jacob deeded several tracts to his sons, George, Riley and Archibald. He left no will. Fathers name may have been Nicholas.
H. Margaret "Peggy" TROUTT and Jacob MELTABARGER were married on 23 February 1811 in Knox Co., TN.78,209 Bondsman was William Troutt, Peggy's brother. Married in Knox County, TN. with Peggy's brother William Troutt as bondsman.

Margaret "Peggy" TROUTT was born about 1785 in Botetourt Co., VA.78 She died about 1865 at the age of 80 in Union Co., TN.15 Information on Margaret is from "The Walkers of House Mountain and their Kinsman', compiled and written by Thomas Hollingsworth Walker (Knoxville, Tn:1986) Margie Mueller Trout of 6203 Hardy Drive, McLean, VA 22101 has a copy of the above book. See letter of 29 October 1994 to Buddy Dalton-Vance. Margaret was the eight child of Jacob and Margaret Troutt. Before her marriage to Jacob, she mothered a son by George Graves named James Troutt.
