159. John William "William" CLAPP139,140,141,142 was born on 17 December 1779 in Guilford Co., NC. He died on 9 December 1860 at the age of 80 in Osceola, Clarke Co., IA. William, with his sister Barbara, were hidden in a hollow log from the British during the Revolutionary War. His father was fighting for the Colonies and his mother was alone at home to take care of their two children, their livestock and everything they owned. William went to Clark County, Indiana about 1817 and lived for awhile with his Clapp relatives.
He went back to NC, sold his plantation to his brother John Henry and then with his wife Elizabeth (Foust) and family traveled to Jennings County, IN. in a spring wagon with $1000.00 in silver hidden in a keg of nails and scrap iron. He builds a sawmill, a flour mill, and a grist mill there which was near the present day covered bridge north of Scipio. He was active in community affairs and donated a large bell to the Scipio Church in memory of his deceased wife Elizabeth. William deeded land to the Trustees of Scipio School on 21 Dec 1832. He officially platted the town of Scipio on 10 Jun 1839. William remarried after the death of his wife and soon after this marriage sold all of his mills and property to his son Peter and moved to Fairfield, Iowa where he owned a lot of farm land. The mill was destroyed in 1897 by heavy floods and it was never rebuilt. William sold out in Fairfield and moved to Osceola, IA, where he lived until his death. Children listed in 1850 census, Geneva Twp., Jennings Co., IN. (19 Aug).

John William "William" CLAPP and Elizabeth FOUST were married on 10 December 1801 in Guilford Co., NC.143 Married in the Brick Church by Henry Diefenbach, M. G. Moved to Clark Co., Indiana ca 1817. Elizabeth FOUST, daughter of Peter Johannas FOUST and Mary SNOTHERLY, was born on 11 April 1783 in Orange Co., NC.143 She died on 24 November 1821 at the age of 38 in Jennings Co., IN. Buried in Old Scipio Cemetery. A stone bears this description, "In memory of Elizabeth Foust, daughter of Peter and Mary Foust. Born in Orange County, NC, April 11, 1783. Was married to William Klapp December 10, 1801. She had twelve children and only six alive. Died November 24, 1831, aged 37 years, 7 months, and 13 days."
